[edit] Early life

Surya was born to actor Sivakumar and Lakshmi in Chennai, and brought up in Coimbatore. He is the eldest of three children, his younger brother is actor Karthik Sivakumar and he has a younger sister named Brindha Sivakumar.
He attended PSBB School [4] and St. Bede's School in Chennai[5] and graduated from Loyola College with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He worked in a textile company before venturing into films. He never had the idea of pursuing films and acting happened accidentally for Suriya.

[edit] Film career

[edit] Early Stages (1997 - 2002)

Surya debuted in the 1997 film Nerrukku Ner directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam, in which he starred alongside Vijay. His five subsequent releases, however, garnered only poor box office returns. In 2001, he starred in Siddique's comedy film Friends, again, co-starring with Vijay, which went on to become a blockbuster.
His major break came in the form of Nandha, which was directed by Bala. Playing the role of an ex-convict who is very attached to his mother, he received accolades for this performance and received a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. His next venture was Vikraman's Unnai Ninaithu, which was followed by Mounam Pesiyadhe, which both turned out to be commercially successful.

[edit] Breakthrough (2003 - 2007)

In 2003, he starred in the Gautham Menon-directed Kaakha Kaakha, a film about the life of a police officer. It became his highest-grossing film at that time, catapulting him to star-status. He then starred in another Bala directorial Pithamagan along with Vikram, portraying a happy-go-lucky village crook with a comic touch, for which he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. Since he was shooting for these two films in 2003, he had to reject the lead role of Autograph, which eventually was essayed by its director Cheran himself.[6]
In 2004 he received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for playing two roles in Perazhagan; an aggressive boxer and a handicapped phone booth keeper. Later that year, he starred in Mani Ratnam's political drama Aayutha Ezhuthu which was based on George Reddy, a student leader in Hyderabad during the late 60s and early 70s. He was part of an ensemble cast, that included R. Madhavan, Meera Jasmine, Siddharth Narayan, Trisha Krishnan and Esha Deol, who played his love interest.
In 2005, he appeared in Ghajini and then in Aaru. He played a patient suffering from short term memory loss in the former, which became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Surya then set up a production company called Studio Green which distributed movies in the Chennai district. Surya's 2006 release was N. Krishna's Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. Appearing opposite his wife Jyothika, the film was a moderate success, primarily due to the lead pair. In 2007, Surya's solitary release was Vel, which went to become commercially successful.

[edit] Vaaranam Aayiram (2008) and beyond

In 2008, he appeared in Vaaranam Aayiram directed by Gautham Menon. Fetching rave reviews and accolades for his performance, he won several awards, including a Filmfare Award for Best Actor, a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and a Vijay Award for Best Actor. Surya played dual roles, of a son and a father, ranging from 17 to 75 years. He also started working out and got six packs. He is now famous for taking his shirt off from now on.
Surya's next film Ayan in 2009 was directed by K. V. Anand. He played the role of a smuggler, pairing with Tamannaah Bhatia and is his biggest hit till date. The film was declared the only blockbuster of the year. His next release was Aadhavan directed by K. S. Ravikumar. The film, despite receiving mixed reviews, became a financial success. 2010, he had his 25th release with Singam, directed by Hari, that became a grand box office success. He played the role of a police officer for the second time.
He will make his Bollywood debut in Rakta Charitra, which is being directed by Ram Gopal Varma and is scheduled for a September 2010 release. He is currently rejoining with A. R. Murugadoss for the film 7aam Arivu in which he will be seen as a circus artist opposite Shruthi Haasan.

[edit] Philanthropy

In 2008, Surya began the Agaram Foundation[3], working to help children who drop out of school early in Tamil Nadu. With the Ministry of Education in Tamil Nadu, he created a short commercial video outlining child poverty, labour and lack of education, titled Herova? Zerova? [7]. The film was written and produced by Surya and also starred Joseph Vijay, R. Madhavan and Jyothika. Agaram has sponsored 159 underprevileged students in 2010 for their higher education in various disciplines. With the firm belief that the educated mind can not only eliminate social evils but also aid in the socio-economic upbringing of society, Agaram Foundation works towards providing appropriate learning opportunities to the rural populace who do not otherwise have access to quality education.[3]

[edit] Personal life

After several years of being engaged, he married actress Jyothika Sadanah on 11 September 2006,[8] with whom he has appeared in seven films; Poovellam Kettuppar, Uyirile Kalanthathu, Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan, Maayavi, June R and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal.
